The Inn at Buck Hill—Its Final Days

June 1, 2020, 1:00pm to 2:30pm - Peggy Bancroft Hall

When the wrecking ball crashed into the beloved Inn at Buck Hill Falls in the fall of 2016, hearts lamented the loss of the iconic structure. Opened in 1901 by Philadelphia Quakers, the inn expanded over the next seven decades from a small wooden structure with 20 rooms, no private baths, no heat, and kerosene lamps to a six-story, 400-room grand hotel built of native stone. Karen Tetor, a former teacher in the Pocono Mountain School District and currently the secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Buck Hill Conservation Foundation, will present highlights from the inn’s heyday years through its final decades of decay into the ruins of mismanagement and abandonment.

The Buck Hill Conservation Foundation spearheaded the project, which raised almost $3 million in private donations to oversee an environmentally sensitive demolition. The BHCF preserved many Interior artifacts, as well as much of the stonescaping designed by American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. It also had a greater vision for the site itself and its conservation possibilities. Karen will outline how the 12-acre inn site is now being leveraged to protect and preserve hundreds of acres of surrounding forestland.

Light refreshments will follow Karen’s talk.
