Gene Shultz of Trout Unlimited will talk about his love of fly fishing, a fun and challenging outdoor activity that has historical roots in Pocono and Catskill trout streams. The presentation will summarize the history of the sport in this region and demystify the basics of the tackle and techniques. Gene will offer a demonstration of casting and there will be displays of equipment and flies for the audience to view.
Gene began fly fishing and tying flies at the age of 11 under the guidance of his dad. He has traveled the country fishing for trout, but mostly enjoys fishing his home waters of the Lackawaxen River, Delaware River, and other native brook trout streams in the region. His love of nature and the outdoors led him to study Biology at Penn State and eventually become a high school Biology Teacher at Wallenpaupack Area High School. Gene recently retired from his career at Wallenpaupack and is currently an Environmental Educator at Lacawac Sanctuary, an Adjunct Instructor in Freshwater Ecosystems at the Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center, and an Energy Educator for the National Energy Foundation. He is a member of Pike-Wayne Trout Unlimited and a board member on the Wayne County Community Foundation.
