John Hechler will be sharing fascinating “bear” facts about our own Pennsylvania Black Bear and their elusive habits during our annual Open House and Ice Cream Social. With approximately 20,000 black bear inhabiting Pennsylvania, bears and people are coming into contact more than ever. Most of these encounters occur when bears learn that there is easy-to-obtain food where people live. Learning about bears and being aware of their habits is important for people who live in bear country, which includes most of the state.
Since 2006, John has been a Registered Master Maine Guide specializing in boating and hunting. He guides bear and moose hunters each fall. John is a former Deputy Waterways Conservation Officer with the Pennsylvania Boat and Fish Commission, spending many summers patrolling Lake Wallenpaupack. In 2006, he was selected Pennsylvania Southeast Region’s Deputy of the Year.
