Memories of our Summer Boardinghouses

June 3, 2024, 1:00pm to 2:30pm - Peggy Bancroft Hall
Waitresses at The Sterling Inn, with the owner at center, c. 1962

The era of the family-run summer boardinghouse extended locally well into the 1950s and 60s. Owners and innkeepers vied successfully with the new “super-resorts” emerging on the Pocono scene by providing superior service and amenities as well as novel amusements and activities for their guests. They typically operated from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and many opened again during hunting season in late fall. They provided the perfect seasonal employment opportunity for countless teenagers who were hired in the summer months as waitresses, chambermaids, and groundskeepers, and for many of us it was our first summer job. Former employees will recall what it was like working at one of our local boardinghouses—Summit Farm, Panther Lodge, The Sterling Inn, The Lancaster, and Nemanie Lodge, among others. Attendees are invited to share their memories of working in a local hotel or boardinghouse.

The program is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will follow the panel discussion. The program is sponsored by our Business Partner, Roadside Bistro
