GDHS Hosts Local History Day for WSES 4th Graders

|

Sunny skies and an enthusiastic group of GDHS Board members greeted Wallenpaupack South Elementary School fourth graders as they visited Peggy Bancroft Hall and Museum. As the students entered the building, Wayne Garafola rang the LaAnna School bell. There were smiles and great questions aplenty as they moved through the four stations: the 1st floor Meeting Room and the 2nd floor Museum at the Hall, the agricultural barn and other outbuildings, including the root cellar and the replica icehouse. Ellen Drake asked students to guess how some of the tools in the barn may have been used. The children sang “Jingle Bells” as they viewed the one-horse open sleigh. Wayne Garafola explained the purpose of the original root cellar, located in a hillside behind the Hall. The large walking spinning wheel and the sleigh were favorite items for the young visitors. One boy stated he “really loved everything!” In closing, the students gathered back in the Meeting Room and Ellen Drake introduced the coordinator of the field trip, Tammy Lavoy, who was a fifth grade math teacher at their school for many years. Tammy is planning great future field trips!

GDHS thanks our Business Partner, The Dime Bank, for supporting this educational event.

The Society also coordinates a special program for third graders, which is held at the school each spring. In 2025 Clara Messinger, Turtle Clan Lenape, presented a workshop where, through discussion and interaction, students gained insight into Lenape history and their nature-centered culture, and the contributions the Lenape have made to our modern way of life. The Business Sponsor for this annual workshop is Dutch’s Market.
