An unprecedented disaster occurred in August 1955 when Hurricane Diane, following Hurricane Connie, produced massive rainfall and caused severe flooding across the northeastern United States, particularly impacting the Wallenpaupack Valley. This book compiles dozens of vivid, first-hand accounts from individuals who experienced the flood in Greene and Dreher Townships. Their eyewitness narratives, many collected through an oral history project that began in the 1990s, describe the rapid rise of water, the destruction of homes and infrastructure, the heroic rescue efforts, the harrowing stories of survival and loss.
Each person has their own story of the same event, but the stories powerfully intertwine. They reveal the resilience and character of the residents who demonstrated teamwork, ingenuity, and neighborly kindness as they worked together to rebuild their community and assist those in need. These personal recollections provide an insightful look at the flood’s impact on the communities of Greentown and Newfoundland. They will help future generations remember this significant chapter in our local history.
