Guided Walk Through Jenkins Woods Preserve

|
Karen Tetor talks about the history of Buck Hill at the beginning of the hike through Jenkins Woods.

More than a century ago, in 1901, the founders of the Buck Hill Falls community acquired a large tract of Pocono woodland, as a place they and their families could enjoy and as a legacy for future generations. Today that land comprises 4,600 acres and includes an almost 900-acre forest preserve that includes Spruce Mountain, Chestnut Mountain, Jenkins Woods, and Buck Hill Creek, designated an “exceptional value” stream by the state.

On July 19 more than 30 members of the Greene-Dreher Historical Society enjoyed a guided walk through the 125-acre Jenkins Woods Preserve, led by member Karen Tetor and John Styk, a lifetime resident of Buck Hill. The Preserve encompasses Buck Hill Falls, Red Rocks, the Glade and Glen Woods, one of the last stands of old growth forest in the Poconos. The group explored various well-maintained trails through the woods, leading to historic stone bridges, new and restored stair towers, fern-lined steps and walkways, and overlooks that provide breathtaking views of the Upper and Lower Falls.

We are all the beneficiaries of the remarkable legacy of those early landowners who believed in preserving and protecting the land, and we are grateful to the men and women who continue to implement their vision through the Buck Hill Conservation Foundation.
