Hannah Penn: Pennsylvania’s First (and only) Female Governor

August 3, 2026, 1:00pm to 2:30pm - Peggy Bancroft Hall, S. Sterling

Three hundred years ago Hannah Penn was grieving the loss of her beloved husband William and embroiled in a bitter family fight with her stepson over who would inherit and run the fledgling colony of Pennsylvania. Blessed with a formidable business sense and a strong will, Hannah Penn saved Pennsylvania. Join Douglas Miller as he explores the life and contributions of Pennsylvania’s original first lady, and reveals how she saved Pennsylvania as its first female Governor.

Douglas Miller has been a museum director for over 36 years. He has led Curtin Village in Centre County, Hope Lodge and Graeme Park in Montogomery County, Brandywine Battlefield Park, Washington Crossing Historic Park, and most recently, Pennsbury Manor, the home of William Penn on the Delaware River in Bucks County. Doug is employed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and serves the broader museum community as a peer reviewer in museum accreditation. This is the third presentation he has given for the Historical Society.

Light refreshments will follow the talk, which is free and open to the public. Our 2026 Business Partner, Palazzi Landscape Gardening, is the sponsor for this event.
