CCC and Local History Day

August 14, 2021, 10:00am to 3:00pm - Promised Land State Park

Greene-Dreher Historical Society will participate in the CCC and Local History Day at Promised Land State Park with a booth featuring displays, maps, photographs, handouts and a selection of books for sale on the early history of the area.

The day will kick off with an opening ceremony in the amphitheater and a free concert by Danville native Van Wagner, whose music tells the story of the people, places and rich history that continue to inspire him, followed by a variety of activities that will appeal to families and guests of all ages, including:

  • Music, food, dancing by Swing Kats
  • Steamtown’s Ring of Fire Demonstration
  • Lecture and Book Signing by Award-Winning Author and Historian Martin Podskoch. His book, Adirondack Civilian Conservation Corps: History, Memories & Legacy of the CCC, published in 2011, will be available for sale.
  • Interview with a “CCC Boy” and Tour of Camp S-139

Visitors can explore the Masker Museum and discover the vital role the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) played in making Promised Land State Park the beautiful and welcoming public space that it is today. The CCC was a public work relief program established in 1933 to provide employment for young, unmarried men who had difficulty finding jobs during the Great Depression. A part of the New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the CCC provided unskilled manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state and local governments. During its nine years of operation, 2.5 million young men participated.

The Blacksmith Shop will also be in operation throughout the day with artifacts not normally on display. Food will be available for purchase by Roadside Bistro and Manning’s Ice Cream.
