Digging the Past: The Work of the Frances Dorrance Chapter, Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology

September 30, 2022, 1:00pm to 2:30pm - Peggy Bancroft Hall

Ted Baird, representing the Frances Dorrance Chapter, Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, will speak about his work at the confluence of the Lackawanna and Susquehanna Rivers for the past 20 years. The site originally focused on the Native American history of the region, which dates from about 9,000 years ago to Contact, according to carbon dating of artifacts found at the site. Baird will also speak about Frances Dorrance, the founder of the Chapter, and her significance in preserving Pennsylvania history. A small sample of artifacts from the excavation will be on display.

Ted Baird was born in Covington Township on the farm originally settled by his great-great-grandfather. He has been interested in local history since he was a child. He was on the Covington Township Bicentennial committee and has been collecting information and pictures of the North Pocono area since he was in his mid-teens. He is currently the treasurer of the Frances Dorrance Chapter of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology.
