“Stars and Stripes” Open House

July 11, 2026, 11:00am to 2:00pm - Peggy Bancroft Hall, S. Sterling

Join us at our “Stars and Stripes” Open House on Saturday, July 11, as we celebrate our nation’s 250th Anniversary. A celebratory cake commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia will be served throughout the day. 

The event will feature a flag-raising ceremony with representatives of the Patriotic Order Sons of America (POS of A) and members of the newly formed Southern Wayne Grange 4H Club. Peggy Bancroft Hall was built by the POS of A Washington Camp 422 in 1904, and the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As in previous years, delectable homemade pies will be available beginning at 11:00 for a recommended donation is $15.

11:30 – 11:45 — Flag Raising Ceremony

12:00 – 1:30 — Museum Tours

The museum and outbuildings will be open for tours, and visitors will be able to see a new display in the barn featuring manufacturing equipment and artifacts from the F.A. Madden & Son toy factory in South Sterling, including the steam-powered lathe used in the turning mill, and the tumbling barrels where millions of spinning tops and other small wooden objects were smoothed prior to painting in the adjacent “top shop.”

The Open House is free and open to the public. Light refreshments, including cake, lemonade, iced tea, and coffee, will be available throughout the day.
