Bus Tour of Historic Hudson Valley

June 23, 2023, 8:00am to 5:30pm - Hudson River Valley
Eastern view of the Jonathan Hasbrouck House, also known as Washington’s Headquarters, Newburgh.

The Historical Society is hosting a day-long bus trip on Friday, June 23, to three historic sites in New York’s Hudson River Valley: Washington’s Headquarters, The Culinary Institute of America, and the Brotherhood Winery. The cost for the tour is $135 per person for members and $150 for non-members. The cost includes all admission fees and lunch at the award-winning American Bounty Restaurant in Hyde Park.

Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh is the nation’s first publicly owned historic site. The building currently houses the award-winning exhibit, Unpacked & Rediscovered: Selections from Washington’s Headquarters’ Collection, featuring over 1,300 objects highlighting Washington’s time there. In the critical months that General George Washington spent at Newburgh, he made some of his most important contributions to shaping the American republic. It was here that he rejected the idea of an American monarchy; ended the Newburgh Conspiracy, preventing potential military control of the government; created the Badge of Military Merit, forerunner of the Purple Heart; and circulated an influential letter to State Governors outlining the key principles he felt necessary for the new republic.

The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park is a private college and culinary school founded in 1946 for returning veterans of World War II. The school operates four public restaurants, including the American Bounty Restaurant, where the group will enjoy lunch. The farm-to-table restaurant features regional and seasonal products and celebrates both traditional and contemporary American cuisine.

Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville is the country’s oldest winery. Participants will take a leisurely stroll through its network of underground cellars, excavated by hand in the late 19th century. The dimly lit cellars house over two hundred oak barrels and feature some of the oldest vintages in America. The winery’s knowledgeable guides will reveal the secrets of these mysterious vaults and keep us amused with tall tales of folly and tragedy. We will hear about the wine-making process and will have the opportunity to test our wine tasting skills in the winery’s modern showroom.

Reservations are required. Please contact Bernadine Lennon at balennon@att.net or 570-857-0882 to reserve your seat. Participants will meet at the Dutch’s Market parking lot in Greentown for an 8:00 am departure. The bus will return to the same location at 5:30 pm.
